Pediatrics

Pediatrics These helmets are used to treat deformational plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, scaphocephaly and other head shape deformities in infants 3-18 months of age. For years, infants have been successfully treated with cranial remolding orthoses.

A cranial remolding orthoses (helmet) provides painless total contact over the prominent areas of the skull and leaves voids over the flattened areas to provide a pathway for more symmetrical skull growth.

Treatment generally takes 3-4 months, but varies depending on the infant's age and severity of the cranial asymmetry.

Rochelle B. Silberman has been designing and fabricating orthopedic appliances for over two decades. As a matter of fact, a few years ago her own child required a cranial helmet. That experience taught her the parent's perspective first hand, thus enabling her to be highly sensitive to the fears and reservations of the surrounding family.

The STAR Family
A Galaxy of Cranial Remolding Orthoses

The STAR family of cranial remolding orthoses is used to treat positional plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, scaphocephaly and other head shape deformities in infants 3-18 months of age. Thousands of infants have been successfully treated with the STARband, which was the first cranial orthosis available across the United States with FDA clearance in 2000. These helmets can be used to effectively manage a broad spectrum of head shape deformities and clinical indications.

The STARbandTM Cranial Remolding Orthosis
Manufacturer: Orthomerica

The STARband™ is a custom cranial remolding orthosis used to treat positional plagiocephaly, brachycephaly and other head shape deformities in infants 3-18 months of age. Thousands of infants have been successfully treated with the STARband™ cranial remolding orthosis since its introduction.

The STARband™ provides total contact over the prominent areas of the skull and leaves a void over the flattened areas to facilitate more normal skull symmetry. Treatment generally takes 3 - 4 months, but varies depending on the patient's age and severity of cranial asymmetry.

The STARlightTM Bivalved Cranial Remolding Orthosis
Manufacturer: Orthomerica

The STARlight Bivalved Cranial Remolding Orthosis is a versatile design used to treat infants 3-18 months of age with moderate to severe head shape deformations. This orthosis is appropriate for infants with scaphocephaly, brachycephaly or deformational plagiocephaly and provides total contact over areas of bossing or prominence where growth is to be curbed. Space is provided over the areas of flattening to encourage growth and facilitate a more normal head shape. The clear design allows easy visual inspection of the head for non-surgical and post-operative indications. This design is an excellent choice for infants with shunts that require frequent monitoring, and opens easily to facilitate donning over tender incisions.

Treatment generally takes 3-4 months, but varies depending on the patient's age and severity of cranial asymmetry.

The Clarren Helmet Cranial Remolding Orthosis
Manufacturer: Orthomerica

The Clarren Helmet is a custom cranial remolding orthosis used to treat mild to severe deformational plagiocephaly, brachycephaly and other head shape deformities in infants 6-18 months of age. This design was created by Sterling Clarren MD, who published the first study in 1979 on the use of a cranial remolding orthosis to manage head shape deformities in infants with plagiocephaly and torticollis. The orthosis can be used for non-operative or for post-operative indications. Application and removal of the orthosis is facilitated by the looser fit, making it a good solution for protection, continued remolding post-operatively or over a shunt.
